What is "Furry"?

Furry is a growing and increasingly popular subculture, that branched off from the broader fantasy fandom. Its main theme centers around an interest in animals – especially identifying with them, often in an anthropomorphic form. Many members feel a strong spiritual connection with the animal world and try to express it in a variety of creative ways.

Furry means creativity

Art, craftsmanship, music, animation, social events – many furries are artists who create works inspired by main motifs and themes of the subculture. One of the most iconic elements of the fandom is a fursuit: a carefully crafted furry costume, representing the owner's “fursona” - their animal character.

Furry means Eco-Consciousness

Furries don't focus exclusively on fun. Because of that close bond they care deeply about animals, both wild and domestic. Many members support and organize initiatives to help animals, raise awareness and contribute to environmental causes. They support organizations like Greenpeace, animal shelters and rescue centers. Many furries take real pride in giving back.

Furry is a part of pop culture

Though the  furry subculture might seem unusual and exotic at first, it's more familiar than you might think! Anthropomorphic animals have been present in popular culture for decades! Just think of characters like Mickey Mouse, Bugs Bunny, Usagi Yojimbo or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. These are all examples of furry concepts present in everyday media.

Furry has deep roots

The idea behind furry culture didn't come out of nowhere. It reflects the timeless human desire to possess the same powers, connect with animals and their traits. From ancient Egyptian gods to Native American totems or Aboriginal spirits – each one of them has been present in cultures around the world for centuries!
